— Surgery, the unhurried way

Most procedures are simpler and quicker than people expect.

Oral surgery

Oral surgery is any dental treatment that involves a surgical procedure in or around the mouth, most commonly tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting and minor soft-tissue surgery.

At The Kurmond Dentist, these are carried out by our experienced general dentists in our Kurmond practice, with local anaesthetic and happy gas available to keep you comfortable. We look after patients from Kurmond, North Richmond, Richmond, Windsor and right across the Hawkesbury.

If the thought of surgery makes you tense, you’re not alone, and you’re in gentle hands. We’ll talk you through every step before we begin.

— Signs you may need oral surgery

You might need a surgical procedure if you’re dealing with:

  • A tooth that’s badly broken, decayed or cracked below the gum line and can’t be saved
  • Pain, swelling or infection around a wisdom tooth
  • A tooth that won’t come through (an impacted or buried tooth)
  • A missing tooth you’d like to replace with an implant
  • Loose teeth or bone loss from advanced gum disease
  • A lump, ulcer or patch in your mouth that needs to be checked

In pain right now? You don’t need to wait, call (02) 4504 1988 and we’ll find you the earliest appointment we can.

— Procedures we provide

A range of surgical care, performed in our Kurmond rooms.

Oral surgery covers everyday treatments like removing a damaged tooth, taking out wisdom teeth, preparing the jaw for an implant, and removing small lumps for examination. Many are performed routinely by general dentists; more complex cases may be referred to a registered specialist, we’ll always be upfront about which.

Surgical & simple extractions

A simple extraction removes a tooth that’s fully through the gum; a surgical extraction uses a small incision to reach a tooth broken at the gum line or not fully erupted. The area is fully numbed first, and we work gently to protect the surrounding bone and gum.

Wisdom teeth removal

Wisdom teeth often cause crowding, pain or infection when there isn’t room for them to come through properly. We assess and remove straightforward wisdom teeth here in Kurmond.

Bone grafting & socket preservation

When a tooth is removed, the bone that held it can shrink. A socket preservation graft placed at the time of extraction helps keep the bone shape, important if you’re planning an implant, and grafting can rebuild bone that’s already been lost.

Biopsies & minor soft-tissue surgery

If we find a lump, ulcer or unusual patch of tissue, we can remove a small sample (a biopsy) for examination, and carry out other minor soft-tissue procedures. Early checks bring real peace of mind.

Dental implant surgery

Placing a dental implant is a surgical procedure, a small titanium post is set into the jaw to support a replacement tooth.

Surgery for root-canal cases

Occasionally a tooth that’s had root-canal treatment needs a minor surgical procedure at the root tip to settle a persistent infection.
