— You don’t have to live with it

If a wisdom tooth is aching or only half through the gum, you don’t have to drive into the city to sort it out.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Service

The Kurmond Dentist is a general dental practice on Bells Line of Road in Kurmond, offering gentle wisdom teeth removal for patients across the Hawkesbury, including Richmond, North Richmond, Windsor and Kurrajong.

We carry out straightforward wisdom tooth extractions here in the practice with local anaesthetic and happy gas for comfort, and we’ll arrange a trusted oral surgeon for you when a tooth is better removed surgically.

For most people, the hardest part of a wisdom tooth is not knowing what to expect. We fix that first.

— Signs it may be time

Wisdom tooth pain rarely fixes itself.

  • Aching or throbbing at the back of the jaw, often worse when chewing
  • Swelling, redness or a bad taste around a partly-erupted tooth (a sign of infection — pericoronitis)
  • Pressure or crowding as the wisdom tooth pushes against the molar in front
  • A tooth that’s only half through the gum and traps food you can’t clean out
  • Repeated cheek or gum biting because the tooth has come through at an angle
  • Impaction, the tooth is stuck under the gum or bone and can’t come through properly

A partly-erupted tooth tends to flare up again and again. Having it assessed early usually means a simpler, more comfortable procedure than waiting until it becomes urgent.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

— How it works at The Kurmond Dentist

Calm, clear and unhurried, here’s exactly what to expect.

Every extraction is done with local anaesthetic. If you’re nervous, we also offer happy gas to help you relax, it wears off quickly, so most people can still drive themselves home. Tell us you’re anxious; we’d much rather know.

01

A consultation and a proper look

We start with an examination and a dental X-ray (OPG) so we can see the full shape and position of the tooth, its roots, and where the nerve sits. This tells us whether the extraction is straightforward or surgical, and lets us give you an honest plan and a written quote before you commit to anything.

02

Simple extractions, here in Kurmond

If the tooth has come through and the roots are accessible, it’s a simple extraction, done right here in the practice. The area is fully numbed, the tooth is gently eased out, and most simple extractions are over in a matter of minutes. You’ll go home the same day with clear aftercare instructions.

03

When we refer you to an oral surgeon

Some teeth, deeply impacted, close to the nerve, or several removed at once, are safer removed surgically, often under sedation. As a general practice, that’s not something we do in-house, so we’ll refer you to a trusted oral surgeon in the area and help coordinate it. Any surgical procedure carries risks; we’ll discuss these before treatment.

— Frequently Asked Questions

Wisdom teeth, answered.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Give our friendly team a call, we’re happy to help with any questions you may have.

No. Wisdom teeth only need removing if they’re causing problems or are likely to, such as impaction, infection, decay or crowding. Healthy wisdom teeth that have come through properly and can be kept clean can usually stay. At The Kurmond Dentist we assess each tooth on its merits and won’t recommend removing one that doesn’t need to go.
For most adults, no, routine dental treatment isn’t covered by Medicare. Private health insurance with dental (extras) cover usually contributes to the cost, and we can process that through HICAPS. Some children and teenagers may be eligible under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule; we’re happy to check your eligibility.
A check-up includes a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues, a review of any existing dental work, and dental X-rays where they’ll aid diagnosis. It’s usually paired with a scale and clean to remove tartar build-up. Your dentist then explains everything they found in plain language before recommending any treatment.
The procedure itself shouldn’t hurt, the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, and happy gas is available if you’re anxious. Afterwards you can expect some tenderness and swelling for a few days, which is usually well managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
After a simple extraction, most people feel back to normal within a few days, with swelling easing over the first two to three days. Surgical extractions can take a little longer. We’ll give you written aftercare instructions and you can call us any time if something doesn’t feel right.

Soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first day or two, yoghurt, smoothies eaten with a spoon, mashed potato, scrambled eggs and soup. Avoid crunchy, chewy, very hot or spicy foods, straws and alcohol until the area has healed. For detailed information read our What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal? blog post.
