— A calm, local first step

A considered choice deserves a considered conversation, not a hard sell.

Adult Orthodontics

Deciding to straighten your teeth as an adult is a considered choice. At The Kurmond Dentist, that conversation happens close to home, with a team you’ll get to know over time, a general dental practice and member of the Australian Dental Association.

Our roots run deep in the area: the practice grew from an original clinic in Pitt Town, and today we look after families right across the Hawkesbury from our rooms on Bells Line of Road.

When it comes to orthodontics, our role is to be your honest first port of call, to assess your situation clearly, explain your choices in plain language, and connect you with the right orthodontist for the treatment itself. You’re never handed a brochure and left to work it out alone.

— Why adults straighten their teeth

You might recognise one of these.

Straightening your teeth isn’t only about appearance. Teeth that sit well together are easier to keep clean and can be kinder to your jaw and gums in the long run. Whatever’s prompted you to look into it, the starting point is the same: a clear, honest assessment of where things stand.

01

Crowding or crooked teeth that have always bothered you, or have shifted as you’ve got older

02

Gaps you’d like closed

03

Relapse, you had braces as a teenager, stopped wearing your retainer, and your teeth have drifted back

04

A bite that doesn’t sit right, an overbite, underbite or crossbite that affects how you chew

05

Crowded teeth that are hard to clean, leading to plaque build-up, decay or gum problems over time

— How it works

We guide you through it and handle everything around it.

We don’t carry out the orthodontic treatment itself in our rooms. What we do is guide you through it from start to finish and handle every part of your dental care that sits alongside it.

01

Your orthodontic assessment

An unhurried appointment where we examine your teeth, bite and gums and listen to what you’d like to change. If we need images, we’ll explain why. No pressure and no obligation, just a clear picture of your options.

02

Your options explained

We talk you through the realistic ways to straighten your teeth, clear aligners (such as Invisalign) or traditional braces, in plain language, including the trade-offs, the likely timeframe and how funding and payment plans can work.

03

Referral & coordination

When you’re ready, we refer you to a trusted orthodontist and stay involved. Because we know the local providers, we point you to the right one for your situation, and coordinate throughout so nothing falls through the cracks.

04

The dental care around it

Before treatment, we make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. During treatment, we keep up your check-ups and cleans. And afterwards, we’re here for retainers, whitening and looking after your new smile for the long term.

— Clear aligners or braces?

There’s no single right answer, it depends on you.

Your orthodontist makes the final recommendation once your teeth have been properly assessed. Our job is to make sure you understand both paths before you get there, so the recommendation makes sense to you.

Clear aligners

A series of clear, removable trays that gradually move your teeth. They’re discreet, and you take them out to eat and clean, which is why many adults prefer them. They suit mild to moderate cases well, though more complex problems can fall outside what aligners can achieve.

Traditional braces

Fixed brackets and wires that are highly effective across the full range of cases, including complex bite corrections, and they’re working away even when you’re not thinking about them.

Many extras policies include an orthodontics or major dental component, but cover varies a great deal between funds and levels. If you have eligible extras cover, you can claim your rebate on the spot through HICAPS for the dental care we provide. It’s worth checking your annual limits and any waiting periods directly with your fund.
Neither is universally better, it depends on your teeth and bite. Clear aligners such as Invisalign are discreet and removable and suit many mild to moderate cases, while traditional braces handle the full range, including complex corrections. Your orthodontist recommends the best option after assessing your teeth.
Most adult treatment runs somewhere between six and eighteen months, though it can be shorter for minor corrections or longer for complex cases. You’ll get a realistic timeframe for your situation once your teeth have been assessed.
Veneer treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic where needed, and most people find it comfortable. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.
