— Trusted local dental care

You’ll see exactly how your guard is made, no surprises, no rush.

Custom mouthguards

The Kurmond Dentist grew from an original clinic in Pitt Town and today welcomes patients from across the Hawkesbury, North Richmond, Richmond, Windsor, Kurrajong, Pitt Town, Bilpin, Glossodia, Freemans Reach, Yarramundi and Grose Vale.

We’re an ADA member practice, and we keep things calm and unhurried so every visit feels comfortable. HICAPS is available on-site, so if you hold extras cover you can claim your rebate on the spot and only pay any remaining gap.

When you come in for a mouthguard, we take impressions of your teeth, talk through the right option for your sport or your grinding, and fit the finished guard to make sure it sits comfortably.

— Who needs a custom mouthguard?

Common reasons people get mouthguards

You don’t need a referral to book, just call us and we’ll arrange a fitting that suits you.

01

Contact and ball sports, rugby, AFL, soccer, hockey, basketball, netball, boxing and martial arts, carry a real risk of knocks to the mouth. A custom guard cushions and spreads the force of a blow.

02

If you wake with a sore jaw, headaches, or worn or sensitive teeth, you may be grinding in your sleep. A custom night guard protects your teeth from that ongoing wear.

03

A mouthguard can be made to fit comfortably over orthodontic braces while still protecting your teeth and lips during sport.

— Two kinds of guard

Shaped to your mouth, for the field, or for the night.

A well-fitted sports guard helps reduce the risk of chipped and knocked-out teeth, cut lips and some jaw injuries by absorbing and distributing impact. Available for adults and children, in a single colour or a mix.

Custom sports mouthguards

A thicker, precisely shaped guard worn over your top teeth. Because it’s moulded from impressions of your own teeth, it fits firmly without being held in place by clenching, so you can breathe, talk and drink more easily than with a boil-and-bite guard, and it’s far less likely to be knocked loose.

Custom night guards

A smooth, custom-fitted guard worn while you sleep. By placing a hard-wearing layer between your upper and lower teeth, it absorbs the pressure of grinding so the guard takes the wear instead of your natural teeth and it can ease the strain on your jaw muscles.

— How we make your guard

Simple, and usually just two short visits.

We’ll also check the fit at your routine check-ups and let you know when a replacement is due.

01

Consultation & impressions

We talk through your sport or your grinding, check your teeth and gums, then take impressions (a mould) of your teeth.

02

Crafted at the lab

Your impressions go to an Australian dental laboratory, where your guard is custom-made to the right thickness and shape.

03

Fitting

You return to collect your guard. We check it fits comfortably and adjust it if needed, and show you how to wear, clean and store it.

— Frequently Asked Questions

Custom mouthguards, answered.

A custom mouthguard should fit snugly over your top teeth and stay in place on its own, without you needing to bite or clench to hold it. It shouldn’t feel loose, cover so much gum that it gags you, or make it hard to breathe and talk. Because a custom guard is moulded from impressions of your teeth, it’s shaped for this kind of secure, comfortable fit.
An occlusal splint is the clinical name for a custom night guard, a hard, custom-made appliance worn over your teeth while you sleep. It protects the biting surfaces of your teeth from the wear caused by grinding and clenching, and can ease strain on the jaw muscles.
Rinse it in cool water and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and a little mild soap after each use, then let it dry and store it in its case away from heat. Avoid toothpaste, which is abrasive, and avoid hot water, which can distort the guard.
Often, yes. Children’s teeth and jaws change as they grow, so a guard can become loose over time. We’ll check the fit at your check-ups and let you know when a replacement is needed.
Many extras policies include cover for custom mouthguards or occlusal splints, though the amount varies between funds. With HICAPS on-site, you can claim any eligible rebate on the spot and pay only the remaining gap. It’s worth checking your level of cover with your fund.
