We’re a genuinely local practice with roots in the original Pitt Town clinic, now settled on Bells Line of Road. We’re a registered ADA member practice, we claim through most health funds on the spot with HICAPS, and we offer payment plans so an unexpected emergency doesn’t have to become a financial one.

You’ll be looked after by the same team that cares for Hawkesbury families day to day, not a call-centre or an unfamiliar after-hours service.

— What counts as a dental emergency?

If something doesn’t feel right and it’s worrying you, it’s worth a call.

A dental emergency is any oral health problem that needs prompt attention to relieve pain, stop bleeding, treat an infection or save a tooth. We’re glad to help you work out how urgent it is.

Phone (02) 4504 1988 as early as you can if you have:

  • Severe or throbbing toothache that isn’t settling
  • A knocked-out, broken, cracked or chipped tooth
  • A dental abscess, gum swelling, or a pimple-like lump on the gum
  • A lost or broken filling, crown or veneer
  • Bleeding or pain after a recent extraction
  • A child with a dental injury or toothache

The sooner we know, the better we can help, especially with a knocked-out adult tooth, where time really does matter.

Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department if you have:

  • Facial swelling that is spreading towards your eye or neck
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • A serious facial injury from an accident

Such as Hawkesbury District Health Service or Nepean Hospital. These can be medical emergencies, and a hospital is the safest place to be.

Severe toothache & abscess

Toothache usually means something underneath needs attention, decay, a cracked tooth, or an infection at the root. An abscess is a collection of infection that won’t clear on its own. We’ll find the cause, relieve the pain, and treat the problem at the source, a filling, root canal treatment or drainage of the infection.

Knocked-out & broken teeth

A knocked-out or badly broken tooth is one of the most time-sensitive emergencies. Bring any pieces with you. We’ll assess the damage and, where possible, repair, re-secure or restore the tooth, and discuss longer-term options such as a crown if it needs more support.

Lost fillings, crowns & veneers

A filling or crown that comes loose leaves the tooth exposed and vulnerable. Keep the crown if you have it and avoid chewing on that side. We’ll re-cement or replace the restoration and protect the tooth underneath.

Children’s dental emergencies

A child in pain or with a knocked-out tooth is stressful for the whole family. We see children with a calm, gentle approach, and eligible children may be bulk-billed for some treatment under the CDBS. Don’t try to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth, bring your child and the tooth to us as soon as you can.

The cost depends on what treatment your tooth actually needs, so we don’t quote a single fixed price. What we do promise is that we’ll explain the cost clearly before any treatment begins. We claim through most health funds on the spot with HICAPS so you only pay the gap, and payment plans are available to help manage larger treatments.

A hospital emergency department can help with serious swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or trauma, and may provide pain relief or antibiotics, but hospitals generally don’t carry out dental treatment such as fillings, extractions or root canals. For the dental problem itself, you’ll still need to see a dentist. For most toothaches, calling The Kurmond Dentist directly is the faster route to relief.

For an adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk if dirty (don’t scrub), and gently place it back in the socket if you can, biting on a clean cloth to hold it. If you can’t, store it in milk and get to us as fast as possible. For a child’s baby tooth, don’t reinsert it, bring your child and the tooth to us instead.
